The Gloucester Wine District, in the Taree Wine Region, is located in the foothills of the Barrington Tops World Heritage Area and is part of the hinterland of the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. The district is centred on Gloucester which is a friendly rural community. The wide range of attractions and things to do in the area, outstanding nature reserves and spectacular scenery make Gloucester is an ideal tourist destination. Although there are few wineries in this area, the district borders the Upper Hunter and there is growing interest in this area for future development. Gloucester lies at the junction of the Gloucester, Avon and Barrington rivers and is located about 270 km from Sydney. Some of the local events and activities include: # Panning for gold at Mountain Maid goldmine # Visiting the folk museum, heritage buildings, the original schoolhouse and many heritage sites in the area # Taking the Bucketts Scenic Walk and enjoying the spectacular scenery # Hiring a canoe or kayak and exploring the rivers in the area. Enjoying the Shakespeare on Avon festival in May # Watching or riding in the Mountain Man Trichallenge, in September # Community markets every Saturday # Cheese-making and alpaca farms # Trout fishing in the local streams and of course visiting the local wineries. There is a huge range of outdoor activities ranging from bushwalking, mountain bike rides, kayaking, canoeing, golf, horse riding, bowls, fishing, 4WD tours, ecotours, skydiving and many more.
