It is very popular with tourists who flock to enjoy its may attractions: Wellington Caves, Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo Observatory, Western Plains Riding Centre, the Gilgandra Coo-ee Heritage Centre. At the Taronga Western Plains Zoo you can enjoy driving among the animals in your own car, just like an African safari, with the animals in an expansive open plains environment. The zoo covers an area of 300-hectares and features more than 1,500 animals, including lions antelopes, and African elephants. Dubbo also has a wonderful heritage and there are many historic buildings in Dubbo and the nearby town of Narromine, which has a fascinating role in aviation history and now features ultralights and gliding. The growing and developing wineries in the Macquarie Valley is also attracting tourists, as well as fresh food outlets and fine foods at the cafes and restaurants. The spectacular Wellington Caves are also worth a visit. Some of the local events are: # The Dubbo Jazz Festival held in August # The renowned Aviation Festival in Narromine held on October long weekend # Dubbo Antiques and Collectables Fair held in July # The National Ultralight Fly-in held in neighbouring Narromine at Easter # The Dubbo Show in May.
