climate The Cooyal Wine district includes wineries north-east of Mudgee along Wollar Road near the villages or Cooyal, Stony Creek, Frogs Rock and Cross Roads. Most of the wineries are located on the broad, rich and fertile volcanic soils of the Region. The district is located about 250 km north west of Sydney. There are about 5 wineries in this District including the famous Botolobar Vineyard and Winery, which was planted in 1971 is Australia's oldest and best known certified organic vineyard. All the vines have been grown using organic principles to meet the guidelines and are sustained without the use of herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Many of the wines are preservative free. Their philosophy is to grow grapes in balance with the environment, not placing the vines under stress, hand pruning and picking, and producing hand crafted organic wines of highest quality and good value. Many other Mudgee Wineries have ben inspired to adopt similar principles.

The Mudgee Wine Region is home to seven districts: Mudgee ; Gulgong ; Rylstone ; North Mudgee ; Cooyal ; Appletree Flat ; West Mudgee.
