climate The Eyre Peninsula Wine Region include all of the Eyre Peninsula, but most vineyards are planted near Port Lincoln which is the gateway and premier destination for the Eyre Peninsula. Port Lincoln is located about 660 km west of Adelaide, and has a cool to mild Mediterranean climate. Eyre Peninsula has developed an internationally recognised reputation for its high quality, premium seafood products. The region accounts for about 70 per cent of South Australia's seafood produce, about 80 percent of which is exported The products include Abalone, tuna, rock lobster, pacific oysters and western king prawns. The first vineyards in the area were planted near Port Lincoln by Boston Bay Wines and Delacolline Estate vineyard in 1984, both of which have cellar doors. Boston Bay Wines is located on the waterfront on the Lincoln Highway about 6 km north of town and offers Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay, Spatlise Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and a mistelle liqueur. Dellacolline Estate Wines is located about 4 km north-west of Port Lincoln. The climate is greatly affected by the proximity to the sea, especially at the southern end near Port Lincoln. Temperatures are 1 to 2 degrees warmer than in Adelaide in winter, but 3 to 5 degrees cooler in summer, with mean maximum summer temperatures of only 25 degrees C.. Rainfall is winter dominant with average falls of about 490 mm per year. The low rainfall during the growing season means irrigation is essential. Spring frosts are rare, and the strong southerly winds do not affect growth.
