climate The Western Plains Wine Region is located in the heart of NSW and includes the towns and villages of Albert, Bogan Gate, Fifield, Lake Cargelligo, Tottenham, Burcher, Euabalong, Wee Waa, Bourke, Cobar, Lightning Ridge, Brewarrinna, Moree, Narrabri, Condobolin, Trundle and Tullamore, Walgett. This area is often described as the `accessible outback`. The area is prime sheep, wheat and cattle producing country and the area is popular with tourists. It is a land of sweeping plains and has a rich heritage featuring the history of Cobb and Co coaches, bushrangers and many historic features and heritage buildings. The delightful Lake Cargelligo provides a fantastic spot for boating, golfing, water-skiing, fishing and camping - all within easy travelling distance of Hillston and West Wyalong. Here travellers will find a range of accommodation to suit all budgets. The area also features a number of natural areas and man-made attractions offering a wide range of activities such as Gum Bend Lake, at Condobolin, that provides a home for fish, native birds and is a great place for picnics, camping and water-ski in the summer. Many Australians use the phrase “back of Bourke”, because this is the start of the isolated outback. However visitors will be astounded to learn that the township of Bourke is an exciting and fascinating town with a wide range of attractions and activities and a rich historical tradition. Lightning Ridge, which is located 75 km north of Walgett, has a legendary reputation and an opal mining town. It produces the spectacular black opal, which is a dark gem-stone with spectacular flecks of blue, red and green colour, the result of iron and carbon oxide trace elements. This region has a small number of unique wineries, well worth a visit when you are visiting the area.
