Perth Hills Wine Region

The Perth Hills Wine Region that lies east of Perth extends along the Darling Scarp, from Serpentine in the south to Chittering in the north. Other tons in the region include Bickley, Darlington, Chidlow, Jarrahdale, Chittering, Gosnells, The vineyards in the Carmel and Bickley sub-regions are located in the high valleys towards the top of the Darling Scarp, but are only 30 km from Perth. With an elevation of 400 m, the climate to much cooler than the other sub-regions and climate elsewhere varies significantly with altitude. The Perth Hills is a delightful area with beautiful forest, spectacular wildflowers, fabulous bushwalking trails, diverse bird and animal life, tranquil creeks and waterfalls, and many other scenic attractions. The passionate local boutique winemakers have experimented with a range of varieties. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are perhaps the most successful, with Chenin Blanc, Shiraz and Pinot Noir also popular. The region has four major valleys, Bindoon and Chittering in the north and Kalamunda and Mundaring central and south. The rivers of the Swan, the Avon and Helena flow through the region. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with cool to cold wet winters, cold nights and warm dry summers. There are winter frosts in the valleys and temperatures are affected by the elevation that varies between 100 and 400 m. Vines grow on alluvial soils in the valleys and less fertile gravelly soils on the slopes. Annual rainfall: 900-1200mm; Mean January temp: 23.3 degrees C; Sunshine hours per day: 9.1; Heat degree days 1550-1800. Harvest: Late February-April. The first vineyard was planted in the Perth Hills in Darlington in the 1880's, at the present site of the Darlington Estate winery and restaurant. However the initial plantings and wine production were very small scale. The first major development was in 1976 when Piesse Brook Vineyard was planted in the Bickley Valley. The Hainault vineyard was planted in 1978, and the 1980's saw a number of small vineyards developed by people seeking a different lifestyle. The region came of age in 1998 when it was given official status as a gazetted wine-growing region. `The Bickley Valley Wine Trail` and other wine tour guides provide visitors with a path to follow to explore the wineries of the region.
