The McLaren Vale Wine Region is located on the southern fringe of Adelaide. Most of the vineyards are in the McLaren Flat and Willunga areas. The region stretches from the southern suburbs of Adelaide including Reynella in the north, to Aldinga and Willunga in the south. Some of the townships in the area includes Chalk Hill, Froggo, McLaren Flat, Willunga and Ingoldby. To the east of the region is the Adelaide Hills Region. The first vines in the region were planted in 1836. Now there are about 270 independent grape growers and 55 wineries in the region. The climate is characterised by moderate winters, warm summers. Most of the mean rainfall of 580 - 700 mm per annum falls during winter. The altitude also varies from the coast to the Mount Lofty Ranges at around 350m. Harvesting in the McLaren
Vale Regin generally starts in early February and is generally completed by May or June.
There are many different soil types in the McLaren Vale region, ranging from fertile
red-brown earths, podsolic soils of low fertility, rendzina, soldolic, terra rossa, and
dark cracking soils. Overall, soils in the McLaren Vale region are mostly of moderate to poor fertility and yields are generally low, producing intense flavour to the wines. The reputation of McLaren Vale Wines has grown steadily with many awards being given and high praise from the win bluffs. McLaren Vale has long been known for its full-bodied red wines, but also produces great whites, fortified ports and sherries. The most frequent varieties grown include: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, Chardonnay, Semillon,
Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Verdelho.
