Penola Wine District, SA

The Penola Wine District includes wineries near the township of Penola in the southern end of the in the Coonawarra Wine Region. Penola is located about 390 km south east of Adelaide, in the heart of one the famed Coonawarra , that is renowned for the quality of its red wines. The town is also famous as the home of Mary MacKillop (St Mary of the Cross), who was the the first Australian to gain Roman Catholic sainthood. The Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival has gained a wonderful reputation as one of the best regional arts festivals in South Australia. It celebrates the arts and literary heritage of Penola and showcases a range of magnificent Coonawarra wines, as well as the premium regional food products, including local seafood. There is a wonderful range of entertainment events, workshops and performances. `Pipers of Penola` is an up market and contemporary Restaurant and Conference Venue located at the gateway of Coonawarra. Peter Thompson has been involved in Viticulture since 1971, actively involved in the establishment and maintenance of vineyards from Margaret River W.A. to King Valley Vic. and everywhere in between. Settling at Coonawarra with the first purchase of the “Home Block” has been followed by 3 other vineyards, “Grandma’s”, “Chapel “and “Julia Hill”. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot was first made in 2010. The vineyard weathers one of the coldest mainland climates but then has the loving sea breezes during summer.
