The East Coast Wine Region is located along the East Coast of Tasmania, from Bicheno to Sorell, which is about 20 km east of Hobart. The East Coast is probably the warmest area in Tasmania with summer temperatures often one or two degrees hotter than in Hobart and the rest of Tasmania. Rainfall is low and the last 25 years have seen a steady decrease in yearly totals. The east coast produced about 340 tonnes of fruit in 2006 from a total of just 57 hectares.The region has many interesting towns and villages: Bicheno, Cranbrook, Swansea, Freycinet in the Central District and Sorell, Bream Creek, Orford in the Southern District. The area is renowned for its wonderful Pinot noir especially from Apsley Gorge, Craigieknowe, Freycinet and Spring Vale Vineyards. Plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon
blanc and Pinot gris plantings are increasing. There are about twenty vineyards in the this district.
