The Murray-Darling, Victoria, Wine Region includes the area where the Murray River intersects the junction of three State boundaries - NSW, Victoria and South Australia and the lower reaches of the Darling River. It includes wineries and vineyards surrounding the townships of Merbein, Dareton, Birdwoodton, Cabarita and Wentworth (NSW). The year run sunshine and irrigation allows for the production of wines with full rich flavours. The region extends along the Murray River west of Mildura to the South Australian boarder. The region is home of Mildara Wines, which W B Chaffey founded in 1911. The Mildara Blass Winery, as it is now known stands on the towering cliffs looming above the Murray River, and visitors can enjoy tours of the winery and wine tasting. Also at Merbein is the CSIRO Plant Research
Division laboratories that conduct research on the grape and citrus growing industries.
Wentworth is the location where two greatest rivers meet - the Darling and Murray Rivers.
It was at Wentworth that explorer, Charles Sturt, first named the mighty Murray River in
1830. In the late 1800s, the town of Wentworth was probably Australia's largest inland port,
servicing as many as 400 river boats that plied the rivers carrying goods along the Murray and
Darling rivers and transporting wool, wheat and supplies to all the river towns.
The area has many natural reserves and abound in birds and wildlife.
