Murraylands Wine Region

The Murraylands Wine Region includes vineyards and wineries in the Murraylands area along the Murray River in South Australia. It includes wineries and vineyards close to the townships of Murray Bridge, Swanport, Jervois, Woods Point and Tailem Bend. This section of the Murray River features steep sandstone cliffs along the banks, with willows and river redgums along the water`s edge. The Murraylands region stretches from the southern River Murray area north of Adelaide, the renowned Coorong, and north through to the Mallee areas near the Victorian border. The major city in the area is Murray Bridge. Agriculture ranges from extensive cropping and livestock production, to intensive horticulture, floriculture and grape growing and wines. One example of the wineries in the area is Willow Point Wines at Murray Bridge that was established 1973. You can taste their wines at their friendly welcoming cellar door located on the on the banks of the Murray River, with delightful views of the river and the vineyard. The region has mild winters, but hot summers with very little summer rainfall. The climate and the irrigation support stone fruit, citrus and grapes. The region offers a wide range of landscapes: - broad flat expanses of the mallee in the east and north towards the Victorian border, the unique sand dunes. lakes and waterways of the Coorong and Lake Alexandrina, to the extensive rolling pasture and native bush throughout the region. The best soils are deep well drained sandy loams, that are ideal for deep rooted fruit, citrus, and nut tree crops and for grapes. The shallower soils in the Murray Mallee are used for vegetables.
