North West Tasmania Wine Region

The North West Tasmania Wine Region includes the area near Burnie and Devonport on the northern coastline, and extends inland to Sheffield and Barrington. The area includes two districts - Coastal and Inland, because of the major climatic differences. It includes the Rubicon Vineyard - Hawley Beach Winery on the coast at Port Sorell and Lake Barrington Estate which is located well inland at Lake Barrington. Patrick Creek Winery is located in the small village of Shearwater near Port Sorell. The renowned Ghost Rock Hill Vineyard is also located on the coast about 10 minutes east of Devonport and offers a modern cellar door experience. This winery produces outstanding wines, all grown from their own vineyards that are planted to Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Rose. The Rubicon Estate vineyards are planted behind Hawley House, which is a superb historic guesthouse that offers splendid accommodation and wonderful dining. The climate at Devonport is quite different to that at Sheffield for the Inland District. The lowest minimum monthly temperature is 3.7 deg C during July at Devonport compared with 2.5 degrees C at Sheffield). Rainfall inland is 20% higher during the peak rainfall period of May-August, but lower during the summer dry period (December and January). The highest rainfall is 159 mm during July at Sheffield compared with 114 mm in August at Devonport.
