The Southern Highlands is a cool climate wine region based on the area surrounding the charming towns of Bowral and Moss Vale, located about 50 km west of Nowra and 200 km south of Sydney. It is a place of old-world charm featuring shady tree-lined lanes, cricket and country fairs during the summer months and rich green grazing lands. The area has extensive natural beauty and is dotted with national parks long the cliffs of the escarpment. The pioneers of the wine industry recognised the outstanding potential of the area's cool sunny climate, rich soils, excellent drainage and undulating slopes The soils in the area range from heavy to medium clays and sandy loams, to basaltic soils and some granite derived soils. The popularity of the area with tourists as a highland retreat was also a major
attraction and the area has many cellar doors, some of which feature cafes and winery restaurants,
and all of which offer friendly advice and service. The Southern Highlands is predominantly
a boutique wine region, with most of the vineyards and wineries offering unique
handcrafting a range of wines. The heavy frosts in the area and the cool summers, create some
challenges for the local grape growers and wine producers with hand tendering of the
vines a common practice.
The major varieties grown are: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Spanish and Italian varieties, Tempranillo,
Rondinella, Corvina and the rare Arneis are also grown.
The Southern Highlands Region is home to 3 districts:

Moss Vale ;
Bundanoon.
