Sunbury Wine Region, NSW

The Sunbury Wine Region located just north-west of Melbourne Airport, includes Kilmore, Sunbury, Craigieburn, Melton, Bacchus Marsh, Arundel, Sydenham. Wineries were first planted in the area in the 1860`s, but declines during the 1890's. At the end of the 1980s pioneer vineyards on properties like Goon Warra and Craiglee were re-established and wine making recommenced. Now there are more than 20 winemakers in the region, mostly focused on Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. On the flats there are alluvial soils and there are basalt based loam soils on the slopes. The region has hot summers and cool winters. Sunbury is one of the three coolest wine growing regions on the Australian mainland. Most of the rainfall occurs in winter averages 550-800 mm and there are frost in winter and autumn. Mean January temp: 19.2°C; Sunshine hours per day: 8.1 The wineries are showcased at the annual Sunbury Wine Festival which is held every year at the end of August. The historic town of Kilmore features a wonderful collection of historic buildings and Kilmore has excellent sporting facilities including a scenic golf course and a racecourse which hosts the acclaimed Kilmore Pacing Cup. Monument Hill, located a few kilometres to the east of town, is a fauna and flora reserve.
