The Hilltops Wine Region in southern New South Wales is rapidly growing into one of the most interesting viticultural regions in NSW and Australia. This region has a continental climate, with generally cool winters and most of the rain falling in late autumn, winter and spring months. The hot dry days in summer, with cool nights provide ideal ripening conditions. Most vineyards are found at altitudes of 450m to 600m and these high altitude provides for cool-climate wines with the generally dry autumn and summer periods, and few spring fronts providing excellent growing and ripening conditions. The rich terra rossa soils of the region enhancing the quality of the Hilltops grapes and provide its unique terroir. The region is located in southern New South Wales, close to the Murumbidgee and Tumbarumba
Regions, and includes the area around the towns of Boorowa, Young and Harden. The first wines were planted by Croatian immigrants in the 1860`s, but the modern plantings began in the 1970`s. The Red Grape Varieties in the region include: Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Corvina, Merlot, Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Rondinella, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Shiraz, Zinfandel. The White varieties include: Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier.
The Hilltops Wine Region is home to three districts:
Young ;
Boorowa ;
Harden.
