Strathbogie Ranges Wine Region, NSW

The Strathbogie Ranges Wine Region includes wineries centred on the town of Strathbogie in Central Victoria, east of the the Goulburn Valley in Central Victoria. The region adjoins the Lower Goulburn Valley and includes the area surrounding the Nagambie Lakes system, Nagambie Lakes and Upper Goulburn ValleyRegions. The Strathbogie Ranges Wine Region is located in North Central Victoria, to the east of the Hume Highway about halfway between Melbourne and Albury and runs from Seymour in the south to Benalla in the north. Most of the vineyards are located in the ranges at elevations from 400-500m. The higher altitude provides for cooler temperatures than on the floodplain lowlands of the Goulburn Valley and the vines are planted in hard, stony, granite-rich soils that provides wines with good local character and unique regional terroir with full-bodied wines. The most successful styles in the region are the whites: Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, Chardonnay, sand Reds: Pinot noir, Merlot and Cabernet. The region is home to many, quality Bed and Breakfast accommodation providers and farm stays. The area is also well known for its wool and prime lamb and horse studs Horse Capital of Victoria, with many of the Nations leading Thoroughbred breeders moving to the area. There is a growing interest in boutique wine and fresh food products. The Strathbogie Ranges Region has a mild to cool climate with a long, cool and dry growing season - Annual rainfall: 804mm; Mean January temp: 19.2 degrees C. The modern vineyard plantings and wine prodcution began in the early 1970s, when Mount Helen vineyard and Plunketts winery were established. There has been significant additional plantings in the last 10 years and the Strathbogie Ranges has been recognised as a Wine Region that is close to Melbourne and attracts many day-trip and weekend visitors. Maygars Hill, The Falls, Dominion Wines, Hankin Estate Winery, Maygars Vineyard, Tarup Ridge Cellar Door Winery are popular wineries in the scenic area that boasts many attractions and facilities for a wide range of activities.
