The Lower Goulburn Valley Wine Region is located less then 90 minutes north of Melbourne in the irrigated farming area famous for its dairy, stone fruit and pear production. The valley is home to many fabulous wineries, stylish country hotels, charming bed and breakfasts and many wonderful cellar door cafes and restaurants. The area includes the Nagambie Lakes Wine Region and adjoins the Upper Goulburn Region and Strathbogie RangesRegions. The Goulburn River flows through the centre of the region near the key towns of Shepparton, Murchison and Seymour before flowing into the Murray River near Echuca and Moama. The region is warm and relatively dry in summer, and the vineyards generally depend on irrigation
from the Goulburn River. The soils vary widely, falling into three principal groups: the common red and brown sandy clay loams; yellow-brown clay loams; and gritty/gravely, quartzose sands laid down by the prehistoric wanderings of the Goulburn River. The climate is best described as temperate to warm with an annual rainfall ranging between 550 and 700mm per year; Mean January temp: 21.2°C; Shepparton averages more than 7 hours of sunlight per day. The first vineyards in the Nagambie Lakes Sub-region of the Goulburn Valley were planted in 1850s . Tahbilk is still one of the most successful vineyards and wineries in the region and it is one of the few wineries in Victoria to have remained continuously in production after the vine louse phylloxera devasted most of the early vineyards. Within
an hour's drive there are a number of wineries, potteries and other places of interest. There are many tourist attractions
in the area centred on the townships of Echuca (paddlesteamers and river trade history), Yarrawonga (Lake Mulwala and water sports),
Cobram and the Barmah Forest. Local towns include: Stanhope, Corop, Rochester, Coonabbin, Rushworth,
Shepparton, Mooroopna, Kialla, Yarrawonga, Mulwalla, Tocumwal, Starthmerton, Numerkah, Cobram, Barooga.
The Lower Goulburn Valley Wine Region includes three districts :
