Cessnock Hunter Valley Wine District

The Cessnock Wine District, which is part of the Lower Hunter Wine Region inland from the Central Coast area of NSW includes the area east of on the town of Cessnock , towards the Hunter River. The thriving town provides the gateway to the wineries and is an ideal place to use as a base for various wine tours and enjoying the other attractions and activities in the district. One popular attractions is the Convict Trail, which is a heritage project that is working to restore the historic Great North Road, that was hand-built by more than 3,000 convicts. Cessnock was originally a major mining centre, however recently the focus has shifted to wine and tourism based on its many National Parks, State Forests and Nature Reserves. Local attrctions and events include: # Enjoying the scenic views from the Bimbadeen Lookout on the Great North Walk. # Visit Millfield, and see the slab-hut inn that was built in the 1830s and was held up by bushrangers in 1840. # The historic Marthaville Arts and Crafts Centre. # The Richmond Main Mining Museum. # The Convict Trail # Visiting many of the historic local villages such as Greta and Wollombi.
