The Sutton Wine District is centred on the small village and community of Sutton which is located off the Federal Highway about half way between Canberra and Lake George, in the Canberra Wine Region. The surrounding hills are mostly user for grazing sheep and the district is renowned for its fine wool. The area is only about 30 minutes from Canberra and it is becoming popular as a place to buy a small block of land, build a house and commute to and from Canberra. Many professional such as scientists and senior public servants buy land in the area and build house for their retirement so that they can make the transition gradually. There are several boutique wineries in the area with cellar doors, including: Gidgee Estate Wines, Maipenrai Vineyard and Winery, and Yarrowlumla Estate.
