Their speciality is bottle-fermented “methode traditionelle” sparkling styles made from chardonnay and, more unusually, semillon, chenin blanc, shiraz and merlot. The fruit is sourced from estate vineyards in Gingin and the Swan Valley and grown with low chemical inputs and no pesticides.
Houghton, WA Dale Road, Middle Swan WA 6065
In 1836, just four years after the fledgling colony of Western Australia was founded, Houghton was established. The winery was founded by a syndicate of three British Army officers and named after one of its first owners Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. The first serious vintage of 25 gallons was made in 1859. Houghton owns the title of Western Australia’s most awarded winery. It won its first wine medal, ‘The Order of Merit’ at the Great Melbourne Exhibition in 1880 and has received over 1,000 awards since! Houghton became known nationwide in 1937 when its legendary winemaker, Jack Mann created Houghton White Burgundy. This was a major breakthrough for both Houghton and West Australian wine. The famous white blend is now known as Houghton Classic White and remains one of the most popular wines in the country. The winery has flourished under generations of exceptional winemakers and its entire range from the White Classic to the Reserve wines receives consistent critical acclaim. The fruit is sourced from every major premium wine region in Western Australia and reflect the places in which they were grown. In commenting on the range, James Halliday agrees with the late Jack Mann, who was known to say, “there are no bad wines here.”
