Swan Valley Wine Region, WA

The Swan Valley Region, which is associated with the Swan District near Perth, is the oldest wine-growing region in Western Australia. It has always been a fabulous place in which to grow vines and make wonderful wines. The flat floodplain provides soils that are incredibly deep and well drained. The hot dry summers means that grapes ripen easily and quickly, and the area is well suited to the production of bulk table wine. The Swan Valley is located just 30 minutes drive from Perth and it is a very popular tourist and day-trip destination offering wine tours, as well as wildlife and historical parks, breathtaking wild flowers in Spring, bushwalking trails through the stunning bushland, a thriving arts and crafts community. Many of the wineries offer fine cuisine at cafes and restaurants that are part of the winery complexes. The Swan Valley is renowned known for its fortified wines and Swan Valley produces more than half of the grapes needed for Western Australia's wine production. The main towns are Caversham, Guildford, Baskerville, Middle Swan, Herne Hill and Upper Swan. There are more than 30 wineries in the Valley, with many have picturesque properties with views of the river. The Swan Valley climate is Mediterranean, tempered by summer sea breezes, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. The average daily maximum temperature in Perth is 23.6 degrees C and in Upper Swan 25.4 degrees C. Minimum temperatures are 13.5 degrees C in Perth and 10.9 degrees C in Upper Swan. The average rainfall in Perth is 869 mm and 737 mm per year in Upper Swan. Thomas Waters planted the first vineyard at Olive Farm in 1829, and this was earlier than the first plantings in both Victoria and South Australia. The Swan Valley is also home to the state's largest wineries, Houghtons, Evans and Tate, and Sandalford Wines. There are also many boutique and family run wineries in the Swan Valley.
