The Swan District Region is an extensive area north of Perth, much of it on the floodplain of the
Swan River. It runs from Perth north west to the town of Wannamal and along the coast
just south of Guilderton. Most of the wineries are found around the towns of Gingin and Yanchep.
Other towns in the area include: Joondalup, Yanchep, Wanneroo, Scarborough Beach, Gingin, Bindoon,
Muchea, Muchea, Chittering, Bullsbrook, Guildford, Bassendean, Inner Perth.
There are many wineries and vineyards are in a narrow band along the Avon River
just north of Midland and in the headwaters of the
Swan River around Guildford (see Perth Hills/Swan Valley Region).
The Swan District Region produces outstanding Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Verdelho and great
Rose, just perfect for a hot summer`s day. The first vineyards at Olive Farm were planted as
early as 1829 by Thomas Waters, and a year later he excavated the wine cellar that
is still used at the winery. The Swan District has a hot Mediterranean climate. Mean January
temperatures are 24. degrees C (75.5 degrees F). Rainfall during the growing season is low at
167 mm (6.5 inches). There are 1791 total sunshine hours during the growing season,
and heat degree days is 1832. The Gingin/Moondah Brook area is a little cooler, and sea
breezes offer relief during summer. The region consists of a flat alluvial plain with the
backdrop of the Darling Range and bisected by the Swan River and its many tributaries. The
Moondah Brook and Gingin areas lie on gentle slopes in the north of the region.
